Calvin and Hobbes

One of my all-time favorite comic strips is Calvin and Hobbes by Bill Watterson.  Calvin's imagination, creativity, boundless vocabulary, and innate ability to get in trouble bring to mind a handful of students I've had over the years.  It's no surprise that Calvin and Hobbes quickly becomes a favorite of my gifted students as well.

We focus on the high-level vocabulary that is found in most of Watterson's strips.  I use the original Calvin and Hobbes book (ISBN #: 0836220889).  A very interesting discussion can take place when students ponder how the vocabulary adds humor to the situations and what would change about Calvin and Hobbes if the high level vocabulary was absent.
